Do you work your patootie off teaching students in creative ways that keep their attention and help them learn? Do you get frustrated when they don't do their part by studying well for tests and quizzes? Even worse, do you feel helpless when they tell you they studied for hours and they still don't score well?
Join me to learn a simple tweak to your teaching, tutoring or coaching that will help YOUR students become independent learners and test taking powerhouses...with the grades to prove it.
In this FREE LIVE Master Class, you'll walk away ready to teach your students the Study Cycle, a simple, straightforward, 3-step model for teaching students to study strategically.
It is quick and easy to teach, and stands alone beautifully in any classroom or in 1-to-1 tutoring, coaching or counseling session. However, it is also a complex system that has embedded within it 25+ tools that help students take ownership of their learning — and “go to the next level” with their studying.
In this 2-part series, we will learn the Study Cycle and also unpack and make visible the myriad tools that are “hidden” inside this simple tool.
PART ONE: MASTERCLASS
In this 1.5 hour Masterclass taught by Gretchen Wegner, you will walk away with an understanding of:

“When I saw the way the material was presented, it was kind of a game changer. Your course was beyond learning styles, beyond the surface level stuff we do in the classroom. Teaching young people how to actually study and to learn, and engage on their own, is something we teachers don’t always do. We should, but we don’t. This curriculum allowed me to look at things so differently. Honestly, this is the best material I have ever seen.”
~ Alison Grant, High School Family and Consumer Science Teacher and Academic Coach, Ohio
Frequently Asked Questions
We will be hosting both the Masterclass and the Practice Lab on Zoom. This is a free software that allows up to 100 participants to be in the room at the same time, to speak directly with me when you have questions, and even to turn on your camera if you choose. If you've never used Zoom before, it's super easy and we'll send out instructions before hand.
Yes! Wouldn't it feel good to start the school year with 3 PD hours under your belt? At the end of the Practice Lab (the second call on Thursday, September 4th) we will give you a link that will allow you to request your certificate. The certificate will include your name, the name of the course, the learning outcomes of the course, and will indicate that you completed 3 hours. Please note that Gretchen Wegner is not accredited by any formal institutions that provide professional development for educators. The certificate you receive is simply proof that you attended the course, and you can submit it to your administrator to find out whether it counts for your school district or association's professional development requirements.
We try to offer our courses at a variety of times so that people in almost any time zone, have an opportunity to attend live. As soon as you register, we will send you an email with the Zoom link for all the courses. The same link will get you into all the courses, and we wll send reminder emails an hour before each class. You can simply show up to the classes that work for you!
Yes! You will receive recordings of both the Masterclass and the Practice Lab. However, please keep in mind that the practice lab includes some hands-on practice. If you don't attend that live, you will want to do your own practice with a friend, colleague, family member, or with your own students.
Good question. :-) First of all, as a former teacher and current academic coach, I have struggled with an “epidemic of passive learning” that I witnessed in my students and clients. Once I learned about the neuroscience behind learning, I knew that teaching this information to students was the key to transforming them into active learners. However, I struggled to find a concise way to share this complex science. Once I landed on the Study Cycle, everything changed. Not only are students’ grades on tests improving, but more importantly -- they are spending less time studying, feeling less anxious about tests, and are much more confident about themselves as learners. This model is too useful to keep to myself, and so I've decided to share it widely. Quite frankly, I'm also hoping that some of you will be moved to keep filling your toolbox by registering in my flagship course The Art of Inspiring Students to Study Strategically. But it's also fine to come just to the free events.
Yes! This live class is designed to supplement the email-based course. Also, brain science teaches us that the key to great learning includes repetition PLUS variation. By coming to this masterclass, you will be showing your commitment to learning this information as effectively as possible. Please also note, if you haven't worked through the email-based course, that's fine too! We've got something for everyone.
I highly HIGHLY recommend that you do this. The more that all the adults in a school or coaching environment are speaking the same language, the better! Also, your learning will be turbo charged, because you will able to discuss creative applications with your colleagues after the course is over. Please feel free to share this link widely.
Yes! I highly recommend that parents attend this free course. It is geared for educators, so you won't hear me speaking directly to your own experiences as a parents or students. However, if you'd like to learn the Study Cycle yourself and then teach it to your own kids, this is a great course for you! There are even some older teenagers who might find it interesting to join us. I LOVE IT when teachers AND teens are in the same room learning together. I think it's quite helpful for teens to listen in as their teachers learn. ;-) Not to mention that when you are studying after school, you are a teacher to yourself!
"I learned so much! This is such a super way to help kids. This was one of the most helpful courses I’ve ever taken as a teacher. I’m always amazed at how much you share in your courses. It’s all so relevant for a teacher. I really like it that it’s based on brain science, too.”
~Tami Andrews, Tutor and Former Teacher in Oho
I’m Gretchen Wegner. I’ve been an Academic Life Coach for students for over ten years.
During that time I’ve worked with hundreds of students and peeked into thousands of classrooms all over the country. I’ve seen what teachers assign that works -- and also what gets in the way of students’ ability to learn independently and study strategically.
Before that, I was a middle and high school social studies teacher.
Before that, I wrote curriculum for non-profits serving kids all over the country.
Before that, I was an egg-head student who got bored easily, and had to invent all kinds of interesting tricks to keep myself focused during school and studying.
So I come by this work naturally -- with 33 years combined experience that has culminated in my signature method for helping students become rockstar learners: The Anti-Boring Approach to Powerful Studying™.
Why did I create the the companion course for educators, The Art of Inspiring Students to Study Strategically? Because you asked.
Well, not YOU exactly. But lots of educators like you. Thanks to the success of YouTube Channel and my podcast, I started getting tons of emails from other teachers and Academic Life Coaches, asking me if they could “pick my brain” about how I teach study skills to students, and how I run my academic coaching business.
I didn’t have time for a lot of complimentary one-on-one chats with folks… and so I created this course, and my Anti-Boring Approach Coach Training Program, to answer everyone’s questions.
But that’s not the only reason I created this course.
I was fired from my teaching job.
Well, not exactly fired. More like: the administrator in charge at the Independent School where I worked chose not to re-contract me. He saw I was a creative educator and out-of-the-box thinker, but was trying to rebrand the school with more “traditional” approaches to teaching and learning.
Turns out, this was the best thing that ever happened to me. When I got over my disappointment, I discovered the fields of cognitive science and academic coaching, and I’ve never turned back!
As one member of the 2017 cohort of The Art of Inspiring Students to Study Strategically said to me, “I’m glad you lost that teaching job, Gretchen. Without it we wouldn’t have you, your inventive approach to study skills, and all these amazing tools that you’ve created.”
It is my honor to be able to meet so many creative, inspiring and inspired educators all over the world. The folks who are attracted to my work are some of the most dynamic, creative, student-centered, movers and shakers in education that I’ve ever met.
If you’ve read this far down the page, you must be one of them too! :-)
Please join me! Together, let’s change the world one creative study skill at a time.
